PGD genetic testing

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is a groundbreaking technology that offers couples the opportunity to have healthy children, free from genetic disorders. So, does it have any other uses?

Let’s go indeed about the PGD genetic testing process and its importance.

What is PGD preimplantation genetic diagnosis?

PGD preimplantation genetic diagnosis is a laboratory technique that involves the genetic screening of embryos created through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) before they are transferred to the uterus.

PGD genetic testing allows us to identify embryos with specific genetic abnormalities, ensuring that only healthy embryos are implanted.

The importance of PGD genetic testing before embryo implantation

PGD genetic testing has the following benefits:

Preventing Inherited Diseases
PGD is highly effective in preventing the transmission of genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anaemia, Huntington’s disease, and many others.

Increasing IVF success rates
By selecting embryos with the highest chance of implantation, PGD can significantly improve the success rates of IVF treatments.

Reducing the risk of miscarriage
PGD genetic testing helps identify embryos with chromosomal abnormalities, which are a major cause of miscarriage.

About PGD gender selection

While PGD is primarily used for preventing genetic diseases, it can also be used for gender selection by extracting a single cell from the embryo and then analysing it to determine its sex chromosome type. An “XX” indicates a female embryo, while an “XY” indicates a male embryo.

The PGD genetic testing process

The PGD genetic testing involves the following steps:

  • IVF treatment: The wife undergoes an IVF cycle to produce multiple embryos.
  • Embryo biopsy: A single cell is removed from each embryo for genetic testing.
  • Genetic analysis: The extracted cell is analyzed to identify any genetic abnormalities or to determine the embryo’s gender.

Once genetic testing is complete, only healthy embryos of the desired gender are selected for implantation in the prepared uterus.

Final thoughts: PGD is not a routine test in IVF

PGD preimplantation genetic diagnosis is not routinely performed on all women before undergoing IVF, as the need for this genetic test should be determined by a qualified physician.

PGD may be particularly beneficial for women with a history of recurrent miscarriages or if she or her partner carries a genetic disorder that might be transmitted to the embryo.
