In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) stands as a hope for couples yearning to establish families. Among the intricate steps involved in this process, embryo transfer holds a pivotal position.
Embryo storage before transferring to the uterus
Embryo storage is a critical step in ICSI process, as the resulting embryos after in vitro fertlization embark on a crucial five-day cultivation period before being carefully transferred to the prepared uterus.
The five-day cultivation period provides the embryos with an optimal environment to develop and mature which helps to get viable embryos for implantation, increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy.
How does embryo transfer work?
Embryo transfer is the final stage of the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) process. It involves placing a fertilized egg (embryo) into the wife’s uterus, where it can implant and develop into a pregnancy.
Here are the steps involved in transferring fresh embryos after they reach the optimal development stage and preparing the wife’s uterus:
- A speculum is gently inserted into the vagina to allow access to the cervix.
- A thin catheter containing the embryos is carefully guided through the cervix and into the uterus, under the guidance of ultrasound imaging to help guide the catheter to the correct position.
- The embryos are then released from the catheter into the uterus.
Two weeks following embryo transfer, a blood test is administered to detect the presence of hCG hormone, a hormone indicative of pregnancy.
To further confirm the pregnancy and assess its development, an ultrasound examination is subsequently scheduled.
Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)
Frozen embryos are embryos that have resulted from in vitro fertilization (IVF) and then frozen in a suitable environment for later use.
Transferring these embryos requires advanced protocols to prepare the uterus and raise the success rate of implantation.
N.B: Dr. Iman El Gendy, the director of the Rahem fertility center, has pioneered advancements in frozen embryo transfer protocols. By incorporating “Letrozole” into the hormone treatment regimen for uterine preparation, significantly boosted the success rates of embryo implantation.
How painful is embryo transfer?
Embryo transfer is minimally invasive, and most patients do not experience any pain during it. However, some patients may feel mild cramping.
Can I walk immediately after embryo transfer?
Gentle activities like walking are encouraged after an embryo transfer as complete bed rest isn’t necessary.
In addition, doctors ask wives not to do any strenuous activities after this procedure to provide the best possible environment for embryo implantation.
Can I go to the toilet immediately after embryo transfer?
You can urinate immediately after an embryo transfer. The bladder can be comfortably emptied without affecting the embryo.
